Under The Red Umbrella is a documentary project headed by Bambi Katsura, a former sex worker, with a largely QTPOC crew of sex workers and allies. The documentary explores how criminalization endangers sex workers and other marginalized communities, and how their communities continue to organize and resist injustice. Under the Red Umbrella aims to preserve and present sex worker historical accounts, combat anti-sex worker stigma, and educate audiences so that they can better support their own sex worker communities.
The Sex Worker Giving Circle (2019-2020) provided a two-year grant to go towards completing the production stages of the film to prioritize the voices of people of color, trans, street-based, and migrant sex workers. Once the film is complete, this grant funding will go to cover film festival application fees and their impact outreach, community screening, and educational campaigns.
